Google Fit hits Play Store as Apple Health rival

Google has launched an Android compatible alternative to Apple Health as Google Fit hits the Play Store.

Previously available on Android Wear devices, Google Fit has today launched as a standalone Android app platform.

A centralised hub for all of your fitness tracking and health monitoring needs, Google Fit builds in data gathered by your smartphone, wearable or third-party fitness tracker.

With walking, running and cycling metrics all covered, this data is then transformed into handy graphs to help you better understand your progress and fitness levels.

Google Fit uses sensors already built in to your Android phone to automatically detect walking, biking and running,” the company has said of the service.

The announcement added: “You can set and monitor your fitness goals based on your activity levels.”

Google Fit is compatible with all Android handsets running Ice Cream Sandwich or higher.

Third party devices and apps covered by Google Fit include those made by Withings, Noom Coach, Runkeeper, Runtastic, Strava.

“It’s a great tool to discover how active you are and check in on your progress as you work on your fitness goals,” Google’s Director of Android Product Management Sabrina Ellis said.

“Just keep your Android phone with you and we’ll make sure your activity counts.”
