Google and LG sign up to be patent pals for next 10 years

Google and LG have both scribbled signatures down on an agreement that will see the firms share patents for the next 10 years.

The new agreement means that both firms can work together on patented tech, sharing the intellectual property love out between divisions across the two companies.

What’s more, existing patents filed by the companies will also be included in the partnership, as well as those filed over the next decade.

Google and LG say the agreement covers ‘a broad range of products and technologies’, although the extent of this patent roster remains to be seen.

Allen Lo, Google’s Deputy General Counsel for patents, said: “We’re pleased to enter into this agreement with a leading global technology company like LG.

“By working together on cross-licenses like this, companies can focus on bringing great products and services to consumers around the world.”

This isn’t the first time Google and LG have buddied-up for the greater gadget good – the Korean firm worked with the guys over at Mountain View to help build both the Nexus 4 and the Nexus 5 smartphones.

LG’s executive VP and head of intellectual property, J. H. Lee, said: “LG values its relationship with Google, and this agreement underscores both companies’ commitment to developing new products and technologies that enhance consumers’ lives.”

It’s not exactly precedent-setting for the search engine giant’s legal team either. Google and Samsung entered a similar kind of 10-year partnership earlier this year.
