Tech entrepreneur and electric car pioneer Elon Musk has said that Apple’s automotive plans are “an open secret.”
Tesla has pretty much had the high-end all-electric car market to itself up to now, but it faces threats from the likes of the well-funded Faraday Future and cash-rich Apple – though even less is known about the latter’s plans than the former’s.
On the subject of Apple’s electric car plans, Musk recently told the BBC that the company would “probably make a compelling electric car,” and that “it seems like the obvious thing to do.”
When Musk was asked if had heard anything about such an Apple car, he called it an “open secret,” and said that “it’s pretty hard to hide something if you hire a thousand engineers to do it.”
It’s a little more polite than Musk’s comments on the matter back in October, when he called Apple the “Tesla Graveyard” for its recent practice of hiring rejected Tesla employees.

On the wider topic of automated vehicles, Musk claimed that in a decade or so it would be unusual to buy a car that wasn’t capable of driving itself. He said that owning a traditional car would become like owning and riding a horse – something you do for sentimental rather than practical reasons.
Musk also claimed to be surprised that two of his three major ventures – Tesla and private space travel company SpaceX – were still running. At the outset, he only gave both companies a 10 percent chance of succeeding.
