EE reportedly working on own-branded 4G phone

UK network provider and 4G specialist EE is reportedly planning to launch its first own-branded 4G smartphone, as a claimed image of the device leaks.

Surfacing courtesy of engadget, the image shows a relatively generic looking black candy bar handset with a heavily EE themed skin. What’s more, in the background of the shot, a removable backplate from the phone is shown sporting EE branding.

Although a number of networks all launched own-branded 3G phones, such as the Vodafone Smart Mini, we have yet to see a 4G phone surface from an operator.

While specs on the handset are currently sparse, the reports have claimed the phone will feature Cat 4 connectivity options and Google’s Android OS.

We’ve contacted EE in regards to the claimed EE 4G phone claims, with the network telling us it is ‘reviewing new products’ but currently has nothing to share.

“Our current focus is on delivering the UK’s best value 4G service to consumers and businesses,” an official EE spokesperson told us.

They added: “As part of this, we regularly review new products and services for our superfast 4GEE network, but we do not comment on rumour or speculation surrounding these.”

According to the early leaks the mooted EE phone will be priced cheaper than the £130 Alcatel One Touch Idol S, currently the cheapest 4G phone offered by EE. There is currently no word on a planned release date.
