CODumentary: A proper Call of Duty documentary, coming September

The meteoric rise of the Call of Duty video game series is about to be revealed in new detail thanks to an upcoming documentary about the franchise – and it’s called CODumentary.

There’s no denying the success of the Call of Duty franchise. There have been at least 27 games across 18 different platforms, courtesy of 21 developer studios. As of February 2016, over 250 million copies of core Call of Duty series games had been sold. Game sales from the entire franchise had topped $15 billion USD.

It’s that success that the UK’s Jonathan Beales and Fizz Pictures are hoping to capture with CODumentary, a documentary about the game series that’s set to release on VOD on September 19, 2017 at 10am PST (6pm BST).

Speaking about the development of the documentary, director Beales said: “One of the biggest challenges making the film was encapsulating a 15-year timeline into 93 minutes. I was very fortunate to work with a lot of great people whose input and contribution really helped make this happen.”

Beales continued: “It’s a rich story of evolution told through the eyes of games developers, fans, industry experts and professional players.”

The documentary was filmed across the USA, the UK and Europe, and involves contributions from developers and pro players, all of whom provide insight into what has made the franchise so successful.

“It’s been a great five-year journey and even though the documentary is centred on video games, the story is about the human input and endeavour involved. The rich experiences of developing games, playing them, or waiting in line to buy them will always remain centre stage,” Beales added.
