Asus could be working on its own Android console, according to leaked benchmarks for a device known as the Asus Gamebox.
The first details on an Android device known as the Asus Gamebox have emerged in the form of an AnTuTu benchmark.
From the looks of the specs, Asus’ mysterious Android device could well be a direct rival to the Nvidia Shield.
If the AnTuTu benchmark specs are correct, the Asus Gamebox could feature a 1.9GHz Nvidia Tegra 4 processor with 2GB of RAM with an Nvidia GeForce ULP graphics chip.
This would be partnered with 8GB of internal memory, with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean powering the UI.
Rather than an Android home console like the Ouya, the listing for a screen resolution suggests the Asus Gamebox will be a handheld affair.
Although there’s no mention of a screen size, the Asus Gamebox will have a 1280 x 720p HD resolution.
Of course, these AnTuTu specs may be from an early prototype of the Asus Gamebox, so may not be the final iteration. We hope this to be true as the Gamebox does little to improve on the specs of the Nvidia Shield, which isn’t even available outside the US or Canada.
Due to the very similar specs, the AnTuTu benchmarks show very little difference in the hardware performance between the two.
However, Asus may edge over the Nvidia Shield by making it more widely available and for a cheaper price. Currently the Nvidia Shield retails in the US for $249.99 (£152.54).
There’s been no official word from Asus on a device like the Gamebox, so we’ll have to wait and see whether the Android handheld console comes to fruition.
