Is the Google Pixel phone ridiculously overpriced?
Google has unveiled its flagship Pixel phones, replacing the Nexus brand famous for its stock Android software and good value. Prices for the new Pixel start at £599 – the same as an iPhone 7. Is that too much? Michael Passingham (@MrPassingham) thinks so, but Max Parker (@ParkerMax) is having none of it.
Michael Says…
Google Nexus used to represent the best-value Android phones on the market. The Nexus 5, one of the best Android phones ever cost just £300 at launch. Now we’re looking at the very cheapest Pixel costing £599 and the most expensive XL priced at £819.
Simply saying ‘Google shouldn’t try to be Apple’ is a fallacy. Instead, Google should play to its strengths and send its great software and services far and wide, instead of locking them inside its own hardware. Google Assistant should be on every phone that’s able to run Android 7.1, and hiding it from the majority of users is underselling its quality.
Max Says….
If Google want its phones to compete with other flagships from Apple, Samsung and LG, it needs near-faultless phones and that costs.
High-end components don’t come cheap, which is why old Nexus devices like the Nexus 4 and 5X suffered from having poor cameras and weak batterys. The Pixel is undoubtedly more expensive, but with that you get a much better phone that will give the iPhone 7 and Galaxy S7 a run for their money.
Is it expensive? Yes. Is it too expensive considering the competition? No, it’s a flagship phone which is commanding a flagship price. That’s fine.
What do you think?
