Apple reveals new iPhone 5S Touch ID fingerprint scanner details

The iPhone 5S was officially unveiled earlier this week and now Apple has announced new details on the phone’s Touch ID fingerprint scanner.

Arguably the handset’s most intriguing and revolutionary feature, the iPhone 5S Touch ID sensor will allow users to secure their phone with a biometric password, as well as make payment authorisations without the need for numerical or written passcodes.

Having given a brief overview of the Touch ID sensor when unveiling the iPhone 5S alongside the colourful iPhone 5C, Apple has now offered new details, including the need to provide a backup traditional password.

“Your fingerprint is one of the best passwords in the world. It is always with you, and no two are exactly alike,” Dan Riccio, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering said discussing the new iPhone 5S Touch ID fingerprint sensor.

He added: “It made perfect sense to create a simple, seamless way to use it as a password. With just a touch of the home button, the Touch ID sensor quickly reads you fingerprint and automatically unlocks your phone. You can even use it to authorise purchases though our stores from music, movies, TV shows, apps and books.”

Integrated within the iPhone 5S home button, the Touch ID sensor is capable of reading multiple fingerprints and can capture your digit-based data at any rotation. The new steel ring around the home button activates the sensor while a sapphire crystal lens ensures clarity of readings.

Further highlighting the features and security options of the iPhone 5S Touch ID sensor, Apple has stated: “Apple customers who wish the use Touch ID also have to create a passcode as a backup.”

The tech giant has gone on to detail: “Only that passcode (not a finger) can unlock the phone if the phone is rebooted or hasn’t been unlocked for 48 hours. This feature is meant to block hackers from stalling for time as they try to find a way to circumvent the fingerprint scanner.”
