Apple has ditched the ‘Free’ button from its App Store listings following persistent controversy over in-app purchases.
The company is now showing the word ‘Get’ for iPhone and iPad listings, a move which is likely in response to criticism over misleading labeling of apps offering micro transactions.
Apple hasn’t explained the change, but the subject of in-app purchases has been a headache for the company at various points over the last couple of years.
It has made sizable restitution payments to parents whose kids have racked up massive bills while buying content from free apps like The Simpsons: Tapped Out and Candy Crush.
Although it’s a relatively small change, in the grand scheme of things, it certainly makes things simpler for consumers.
However, one has to wonder whether the recent South Park episode, which lambasted game developers for praying on gamers’ impulses with in-app purchases, has hastened the change.
While free apps are now listed as ‘Get,’ paid apps display the price as normal.
