Amazon is reportedly working on its own games console due to launch in November.
Expected to launch as a fully-fledged console complete with a blossoming games library helped by its Kindle Fire apps, Amazon’s games console could be with us by Christmas.
There have been several rumours surrounding an upcoming Amazon console, including that it would be much more than a set top box with a controller.
The majority of the gossip has been stirred up by industry investigator Superannuation.
“Rumour was that the console is not just a set top box with a controller, not far away from release and core-orientated,” said Superannuation on Twitter.
Amazon created its own games development team last year, but now it is said to be working on its own games console, even asking its developers to make existing apps controller compatible.
The online retail giant is asking for all future games to integrate controller support too “in preparation for a console launch and immediate games library.”
According to Superannuation’s series of tweets and retweets, Amazon has also been poaching Microsoft developers to help create a solid launch games library for its console.
Amazon gained Gears of War 3 and Quantum Break executive David Holmes in May, while another source said Amazon has been hiring game developers like a maniac in Seattle.
Previously President of Square Enix America and a former Sega, Namco and Microsoft employee, Mike Fischer also joined the Amazon team in May as the Vice President of Digital Music and Video for Amazon Japan.
Amazon has also demoed a prototype console hardware in an attempt to generate games content.
If Amazon did launch a games console it would be a direct rival to other Android consoles like the Ouya. However, it would benefit from allowing gamers to purchase games through Google Play as well as its own Amazon Appstore.
Amazon also recently announced that its UK store as well as its American arm would now support digital game and software downloads which could be a link to a console launch later this year.
Amazon may have to watch out though as Google is reportedly working on its own Android console too.
