Windows Surface Mobile leaks as ‘Juggernaut Alpha’, boasts powerhouse specs

The Lumia 535 was the first official Microsoft phone

All eyes are on Microsoft ahead of the upcoming launch of Windows 10 Mobile.

Of course, it needs an impressive launch vehicle for the new software, and we may have just glimpsed it.

A new report seemingly details the specs for an upcoming Microsoft flagship smartphone, ahead of its official debut.

The spec sheet comes courtesy of WMPowerUser, which cites an anonymous source for the leak.

The device, which has so far been rumoured as the Windows Surface phone, is purportedly being developed under the codename “Project Juggernaut Alpha”.

What’s more, the mystery handset looks set to tout a seriously impressive roster of components.

For starters, the Windows Surface phone is tipped to feature a 5.5-inch display with a 1,440 x 2,560 pixel resolution.

That’s expected to be protected by Corning’s top-end Gorilla Glass 4.

Powering the handset is a claimed 64-bit Intel Atom x3 (SoFIA) processor, paired with 4GB of RAM – a 3GB option is rumoured to be available also.

The phone looks set to boast impressive camera credentials too, with a 21-megapixel PureView Zeiss 6-lens shooter pegged for the rear of the phone.

That’s reportedly going to be paired with a front-facing 8-megapixel Zeiss wide-angle camera.

Storage options purportedly include 64Gb and 128GB, which is pretty good considering there’s also a MicroSD slot.

The operating system will, unsurprisingly, be Windows 10 Mobile. After all, the software is expected to debut on the handset.

There are a number of bonus features expected to appear on the device too.

The first is a USB-C port. That’s the burgeoning USB standard that’s expected to take the mobile world by storm over the next year.

It offers faster transfer rates and a reversible tip, just like Apple’s Lightning cable.

The handset is also tipped to offer wireless charging, although it’s not clear what standard this will work off.

There’s also rumoured to be a Surface Pen – similar to the Note 5 – in tow, intended to woo those for whom fingers are deemed too clunky.

Finally, the device is expected to be crafted from aluminium and magnesium, with a “unibody” design. That suggests we’re looking at a premium build quality.

According to the report, we’ll see the handset peddled as the “Surface Mobile”, and will land on store shelves at either the end of 2015 or early 2016.

It’s worth noting that Microsoft hasn’t confirmed any details about such a flagship device, so take this report with a pinch of salt.

If this report is true however, then is it enough to convince you to hop aboard the good ship Windows? Let us know in the comments.

Gonna be tough to choose between this and the 950, but I think I'll wait for the Surface. Sounds like it's going to be a kick ass machine if the rumors about it are true!

Most annoying thing I keep reading on tech sites recently is any mention of USB Type C comes with a quote saying that it'll improve performance.
USB Type C connectors are just connectors, they have no impact on the performance.

Windows Central hasn't reported on this so I don't trust it. I don't care how awesome it sounds. It's not true (yet)

I don't trust this.
Here's what I do know:
Microsoft is planning an Intel powered device. This is a fact. It's not guaranteed to launch, or even to be completed, but it is being planned.
However, this phone is not going to debut Windows 10 Mobile. That will be left to the Lumia 950 and 950 XL, which have been leaked with full specs numerous times and even with pictures with the 950 XL. These are expected this fall. The Intel powered Windows Mobile will probably arrive (if it arrives) early 2016.
As of now, I will take these specs with a very abundant pinch of salt.

Not moving from my current windows phone if Windows 10 mobile has the privacy issues of the desktop version.

They can improve the charging time a lot .. I think I read somewhere that the USB C can push up to a 100W !!

That's true. An amazing amount of power through such a small connector. Charging will almost certainly be improved.
Speed, on the other hand, may not.

x3 rumours are not fake, Microsoft and Intel announced in April they were working on devices for the end of this year.

Whether THIS phone is real or not is another matter. Not sure if an x3 could drive all that, I'd have to look into it more.
