The new Tomb Raider reboot launched last week has already sold over 1 million copies worldwide, with Crystal Dynamics claiming that stores were running low on stock.
Crystal Dynamics’ Global Brand Director, Karl Stewart announced the news on Twitter, revealing that the reboot had been a resounding success, selling over 1 million copies in the first 48 hours alone worldwide.
“Wow, 1m gamers playing in less than 48 hours!” tweeted Stewart. “@tombraider fans, you’re AMAZING. Hearing some stores are running low… more copies are on the way!”
By Friday, the reboot had already soared to the top of the UK Gaming Chart’s top spot on the Xbox 360 platform, second for PS3 and fifth in the PC platform charts, falling behind Sims 3: University Life and the Simcity, despite its rocky launch. Tomb Raider currently lies at the top of the UK All Formats Game Chart, knocking down the previous chart leader, Crysis 3, to sixth place.
Stewart also announced that Tomb Raider had been well received by gaming fans, after he received an influx of tweets from appreciative players.
“I could literally do this tweet every hour as I get so many. Thank you again to all the @tombraider fans sendin [sic] tweets of enjoyment,” he later added.
The new game nearly doubled the sales of the franchise’s previous record holding, Tomb Raider: Legends. It also beat out any records for launch week sales, becoming the fastest-selling Tomb Raider game on PS3 and Xbox 360.
Tomb Raider is the first re-imagining the series has had since the first Tomb Raider launched in 1996. The latest game explores Lara Croft’s origins story, following her evolution from student to the Tomb Raider fans know and love.
Out now for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC, Tomb Raider players will also be treated to the first DLC content coming exclusively to Xbox Live on March 19.
