Sony Xperia Z3, Z2, & Z3 Compact Lollipop update could be hours away

Sony appears to be gearing up for the imminent – and long-awaited – rollout of the Android 5.0 Lollipop update.

Unfortunately, it’s only landing on the Xperia Z3, the Xperia Z2, and the Xperia Z3 Compact, at least initially.

A leaked Sony update schedule (via PhoneArena) seems to clue the over-the-air release as ‘now uploading’, with the update status listed as ‘finalized’.

This is a region-specific release schedule however, with the region in question being India in this case.

However, if Lollipop is good to go then we’ll likely see Lollipop roll out across all markets very shortly thereafter.

It’s worth noting that the Android 5.0 update will be coming to the entire Xperia series at some point, but any phones outside of that branding won’t be getting it.

Sony has been one of the slowest manufacturers in terms of upgrading its flagship series to Google’s latest Android OS version.

We first got a glimpse of working Android 5.0 back in September, and the software’s source code was released over three months ago.

Usually, third-party manufacturers take some time to tweak Google’s code to add bonus features or design changes for their platform.

While Sony took its sweet time, however, it now seems that the software is finally ready. This is lent further credence by the fact that Sony showed off display Xperia Z3 handsets at last week’s MWC in Barcelona running Lollipop OS.

We’ve asked Sony for official comment on exact UK rollout details, and we’ll update you as soon as we know more.

Does anyone know what version is likely to be released? I assume as Google have only just released 5.1 then it won't be that?

As Google have released 5.1, Sony is ALMOST ready to release 5.0 (and I am sure will be almost ready for a few more months, like it warms somebody's hearts). If you are not on iPhone or Nexus, your phone is ALWAYS outdated. Thank you, stupid manufacturers and your useless proprietary layers!

Pointless article unless you are in India.

I'd guess not 5.1, but perhaps as updating to the point releases isn't a UI overhaul we may not have to wait quite as long.I'd bet 20p on it being 5.0.2.

I wasn't aware many other manufacturers had released 5.0 updates much quicker. Certainly not across as many of teh handsets that Sony plans.

Pointless article even for India.. Someone made this information up and now its viral across the internet. Shows how unverified data on the net can be..!! But anyways, we've been seeing daily updates to the same articles over and over again, appearing the Google Search news section, when actually the information in there is as dated as three to four months..

It took sony several months to tweak 5.0 from Lollipop, this is what they are releasing. 5.1 has been official this week only
