Ongoing PS4 shortages resulting in lost sales, Sony admits

Luke Johnson

Sony has spoken out on the continued PS4 stock shortages, admitting it has lost sales as a result of its ongoing supply chain woes.

Despite PS4 sales having dominated those of the rival Xbox One since both consoles landed last November, Sony’s next-gen console has been hampered by low stock levels since launch – an issue which continues to persist.

Now, talking with TrustedReviews, Sony has spoken out on its PS4 stock shortages, suggesting that seven months on from launch, it is finally nearing a full production run.

“We haven’t yet caught up with the initial demand across Europe.” Fergal Gara, Managing Director of Sony Computer Entertainment UK told us during E3 2014. “We are still dealing with the day one market.”

He added: “We are very close to being in a full supply situation, but we are not quite there yet.”

Although describing the PS4 supply chain as being “close” to clearing the backlog, Gara admitted the issues continue to result in lost sales.

“We may have lost some sales,” the PlayStation UK head said. He added: “There is no update on PS4 sales figures right now, but suffice to say it is still selling, and selling very well.”

Looking at areas worst affected by the continuing PS4 stock shortages, Gara suggested that the UK is actually faring better than most.

“We are in a bit better shape in the UK, but there are countries that are still selling out every last unit that drops into the market on a weekly basis,” he told us.

“A good example at the moment would be Germany who had phenomenal sales figures last week, but they just haven’t had enough stock so far.”

Although having lost PS4 sales due to a lack of stock – and potentially pushing consumers to the abundantly available and price reduced Xbox One – Gara has highlighted the impending festive period as way of recouping lost sales.

“We have spent a lot of time at E3 talking about the plan for Christmas and I think we’ve got enough exciting content to be able to rekindle that interest,” he said.

“Anyone who may have said ‘forget about it, I will leave it for a while’, I think we have enough of a story now to say to them that they should reassess.”

In USA no problem I just bought one in the Game stop store, Saw about 10 at walmart the same day. And best buy had some. Game stop even had a promotion to get 150 bucks for a 360 or ps3 during E-3. I traded both and with games traded I got my PS4 for free and they had them

They're in stock all over the place in the UK.

June 19, 2014, 11:40 pm

Ha, are they preparing for next months NPD's?

Hates bad writers.

Simply not true. I've seen dozens of boxes at the biggest retailers all over the city. Just like the Xbox, just like the Wii U. It isn't a shortage, you're trying to make up hype. I could by buy 6 from local Walmart right now, I could get another 4 from Gamestop. If the shortages were true, people would have been picking them up here to sell on Ebay for a profit. But they don't. Why? The consoles are in stock, everywhere. The odd store might be out, but looking at more than one store could help.

Artificial demand. Nothing more. We've seen it plenty in this business.

consoles in stock in bulks everywhere gfoh Sony

I think that's PR nonsense. There's no way this far after launch they haven't caught up with launch day demand. That said, in my small town in Illinois, the things are still close to impossible to come by.

With regards to UI improvements: I don't mind the UI, but would love to see some more customization options like the ability to create folders or at least arrange the icons how I want. Different themes and the ability to mute the music at the home screen would also be welcomed.

Looking forward to seeing how June sales play out with Xbox unbundling the Kinect. This is a key month for Xbox, but I get the feeling PS4 will outsell them again, the momentum is just so strong right now. Might be way off base with that though.

LOL! Duh, thanks Captain Obvious, that's what Sony said in this interview.
in UK, PS4 stock is OK but in other European countries.....

Do they hay Walmart in Germany or Spain?

June 20, 2014, 1:24 am

I agree. I expect it to go the same until the holiday times.

You can mute the music, but I like the music :P
As for the other things, folder is a must have and themes would be nice but I'd rather them introduce static and dynamic themes together rather than having to wait longer for dynamic. But above all those things, MP3 support is #1 on my list. That would probably cause a UI overhaul anyway and introduce a lot of things that people believe are missing.

Until? Why wouldn't it continue? Xbox will outsell PlayStation the month Halo 5 is out. And if not then they're in bigger terrible than anyone thought.

Something tells me you didn't read the article.

June 20, 2014, 1:41 am

Ya, I don't get what you're saying. I think the PS4 will keep winning NPD's until the holiday times. Like when Halo comes and then Christmas and Black Friday and all that. Don't forget FH 2 as well. Around then.. then there will be a push by MS imo.

June 20, 2014, 1:48 am

Just found that option, and quickly put the music back on because it's just so dull without it! :)

Why is mp3 playback so important? Aren't there enough devices out there that do that already? Not trying to be rude, I just don't understand. Never had a PS3 until just last week but evidently the mp3 is viewed as a big loss!

June 20, 2014, 1:57 am

I'll also like to add that the 360 rocked the PS3 for over 2 years in a row in sales numbers in the NPD's. Sony was in no terrible position. The X1 is going to be fine.

June 20, 2014, 2:05 am

In what world was that, the bizarro world? Oh, I get it, you think America equals the world.... sorry, I didn't realize your viewpoint was so limited. Carry on then.

Hates bad writers.

June 20, 2014, 2:45 am

Are either of those even remotely important? Not really. Come back when they're viable game markets, right now, they're both small. Then again, from what I read they aren't happening there either. It's not shortage by sale, it's shortage by choice. They aren't sending them on purpose, and you're a moron if you can't see this.

Do they generate less than 5% of the total gaming industry's revenue in Germany and Spain? Probably. The two biggest gaming markets in the world tell us exactly what's going on. They're flooding them with consoles to sell to the people that actually have money, they're shorting out the smaller markets to create hype over "demand" (which is impossible to measure anyways, but of course fanboys will eat up anyways). If they actually had a big enough chunk of people wanting consoles, stores across America and Japan wouldn't have a bunch of PS4's in stock, ready to sell, waiting on some moron to believe in artificial demand. While we starve a rather small market in order to create "demand". Do you have any idea how often this happens in business world?

Lmfao Sony you are pathetic if you think there is shortages Bullshit There are PS4 everywhere

June 20, 2014, 4:38 am

you live in Germany?

You Are Flat Out Wrong & Salty

June 20, 2014, 6:39 am

Making up the 'shortage' excuse to make it sound like a 'hot pie cake', yet it still cannot make any real profit as a whole.

Sony execs are a bunch of braindamaged clowns....

June 20, 2014, 6:48 am

Are you aware that there are also much better games than "halo" coming out for the PS4 (And the Xbone for that matter). Halo is past its best and fanboys of the series are the only ones picking it up.

Also, Halo comes out NEXT year... at christmas

June 20, 2014, 10:18 am

its in the past? thats like saying uncharted is dead.. which is probably true after playing the lonely no co-op campaign for a few hours then you have the terrible multiplayer.. the thing about halo is that it has co op story and a really fun multiplayer with the halo collection comming with 100s of maps.. i guess ps4 can play their superior atari style indie games to keep them busy.
