The OnePlus 5 could put rival smartphones to shame when it comes to performance, if a new leak is to be believed.
There are plenty of ways to test how powerful a smartphone is, but the most popular method is benchmarking. This involves using software that pushes a handset’s processor to its limits, resulting in a final score that describes how well the phone performed. Geekbench does just that, and is one of the more popular benchmarking apps.
Excitingly, we may have some benchmarking details for the OnePlus 5 – before the phone has even been officially announced. GSMArena has received a screenshot of a Geekbench readout for the OnePlus 5 – a.k.a OnePlus A5000 – which it claims came from a “very credible source”. Naturally we can’t verify this information however, so take it with due caution. This could be very easily faked.
But if it’s real then it’s a serious win for the OnePlus 5. The handset managed an impressive 1963 single-core score and a similarly lofty 6687 multi-core score.
It’s not a huge surprise that the phone scored so highly; after all, it’s rumoured to feature Qualcomm’s latest and most powerful chipset, the Snapdragon 835. But the scores also trump both Samsung’s Galaxy S8 and Sony’s Xperia XZ Premium, both of which also use the Snapdragon 835.
For instance, the Samsung Galaxy S8 gets, on average, a score of 1929 during the single-core test and 6084 during the multi-core test. The Xperia XZ Premium also performed worse on average, with a 1943 score for single-core and 5824 for multi-core.
However, it’s important to caveat this post with the fact that Geekbench scores aren’t a definitive measure of a phone’s performance. Scores can vary from test to test based on a wide range of conditions. Also, the way Geekbench tests a phone isn’t necessarily indicative of normal usage patterns for an average user. And then there’s the fact that we can’t actually verify the OnePlus 5 scores either.
Still, it’s an early sign than the OnePlus 5 may be as powerful as the flagship phones it’ll be competing against. However, most users don’t actually buy phones based on processor performance, so we’ll have to see how well the OnePlus 5 works as an entire smartphone package.
OnePlus has confirmed that the OnePlus 5 will launch this summer, although we don’t have a definitive release date just yet.
