LG WebOS smartwatch platform is in the works
While LG is the name behind the first Android Wear watch we saw, the LG G Watch, the company is also working on a WebOS smartwatch platform.
LG opened up a developer website that teases a development kit for webOS watches, confirming that a webOS smartwatch is probably in the pipeline.
For the less nerdy among you, a development kit is what’s used to create pieces of software for a platform.
The dev site has since been pulled, but acts as confirmation of what’s brewing in the background.
A teaser image on the site also featured the Bean Bird character, which we met when LG showed-off its webOS TV interface in January 2014.
LG bought the webOS interface from HP in 2013 for use in its TVs. It’s what gives LG the potential to create its own end-to-end watch, rather than borrowing half the recipe from Google by using Android Wear.
Samsung has made similar moves, using Tizen in smartwatches like the Gear 2.
However, with no official announcement made, there’s no guarantee that the WebOS smartwatch will actually make it to market any time soon, if at all.
LG has re-proved the worth of the webOS system, though – its implementation in LG’s latest TVs is excellent.
WebOS was initially used in Palm phones like the Palm Pre, which was released back in 2009.
At present, LG offers two Android Wear watches, the G Watch and the rather more attractive, round LG G Watch R. Could the next one use webOS?
The Verge managed to nab a few additional photos from the LG website before it was pulled, and they seem to suggest a webOS watch is definitely on the cards:
