Jolla Tablet: the crowdfunded slate PC raises $1m in two days
Jolla good

Jolla Tablet is a crowdfunded slate PC, and it's raised over $1 million in just two days.

The big selling point is the Sailfish OS. Like Android, it's open source, but lets you tweak it as you see fit. You can have a say in how the tablet works, too. Head to the community forum at together.jolla.com, and you can suggest which features you'd like to see. The community votes on which – if any – it wants developed and incorporated. If yours gets the thumbs up, it'll make it to the tablet.

Jolla used the same policy for its first device, the Jolla Smartphone, which launched this year. That handset didn't exactly made Jolla a household name, but the groundswell of support for the Jolla Tablet shows that plenty of people want a different device.

Jolla also promises increased security features, streamlined multitasking, and gesture controls. The tablet runs Android apps, so you won't be short of things to do.

The hardware looks pretty impressive too. It's got 32GB of storage along with a microSD card slot. There's also 2GB of RAM, a 64-bit, 1.8GHz quad-core Intel chip, 5-megapixel rear-facing camera and 2-megapixel front-facer. The 7.85-inch screen has a resolution of 2,048x1,536 pixels, giving it a pixel per inch count of 330ppi.

And it costs just $189 (£120). Bargain. Though the first batch at that price has sold out, so it'll set you back a still very reasonable $209 (£133).

It'll start shipping in May next year. We're excited to see just how much money it can raise – could it topple the Coolest Cooler as the highest crowdfunded gadget ever? Stay tuned.
