The iPhone 6 will touch down in China this week, and pre-orders have gone through the roof.
Since they went live on Friday morning, more than 10 million orders have been placed. More than 1 million were placed in the first six hours of availability, while the country’s networks have taken another 9 million reservations.
The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus went on sale in nine countries in September. Apple sold 10 million units in the opening weekend. Now it looks like China could top that.
According to reports, China Mobile – the world’s largest network by subscriber base – will take delivery of 6.5 million units of iPhone 6. That’s about half the total number that’s expected to enter the country.
Surprisingly, the larger handset is slightly more in demand, with a 51-49 split between buyers.
Both handsets went on sale in the UK on 19 September. Apple says it would have sold more than 10 million units had it had enough stock.
The Cupertino company wants to have the handsets for sale in 115 countries by the end of the year. Experts estimate sales of between 50 and 60 million.
Apple is holding another event on Thursday, where it’s expected to launch its new iPad. It will stream the event live, or try to, after the farrago that was the stream for the iPhone launch.
