Early benchmark tests that revealed that iPhone 6‘s graphics processing unit (GPU) to only a little faster than the iPhone 5S equivalent.
At last week’s big Apple event, the company made the claim that the GPU of the A8 chip found in the iPhone 6 runs 50 percent faster than the A7 equivalent found in the iPhone 5S.
That considerable gulf in pixel-pushing power doesn’t seem to translate to benchmark results – or at least those of the Basemark X test, as highlighted over on Rightware.
Sure enough, the new iPhone 6 gets the top result out of all iOS devices with a score of 21,204.26. However, last year’s iPhone 5S scored 20,253.80 – less than 1,000 points behind.
To place that into context, the iPhone 5 scored 10,973.36
At last year’s iPhone 5S launch, Apple called the A7 chip with its shift to a 64-bit architecture “the most forward-thinking smartphone in the world.”
That appears to have been borne out by this benchmark test. It suggests that the real leap forward in performance was achieved last year, and that this year’s iPhone and iPad revamps will offer incremental improvements on the A7 chip range.
Of course, these are early days, and no benchmark offers a complete picture of a GPU’s capabilities. It remains to be seen if the A8 holds some advantages with any other areas of graphical performance.
But at the very least, it looks as if Apple’s promise of a relatively future-proof iPhone 5S was on the money, and anyone who bought last year’s flagship Apple phone probably won’t be confronted with performance issues for another year at least, and probably well beyond.
