What is Halo 5?

Halo 5 is the as yet unofficial title for the new Halo game officially announced at E3 2013 by 343 Industries.

Developed by 343 Industries, which was responsible for Halo 4, the game was announced with a 2014 release date for the Xbox One. It wasn’t ever intended to be a launch title, but will aim to take “full advantage” of the Xbox One’s specs, including its dedicated servers.

Marking the move to next-generation, Halo 5 will be the first in the series to run at a 60fps frame rate.

As far as we know, Halo 5 will be an Xbox One exclusive, as 343 Industries has mentioned the game launching for any other platforms, including the Xbox 360 and PC.

It’s worth mentioning that the game is currently known in official press releases as Halo Xbox One, rather than Halo 5, but until we know more that's what’s it is being called by fans.

For now, we know little else about the next Halo game, but we’ll keep this page updated with all the latest news as it is released.

Halo 5 Release Date: When is Halo 5 coming out?

Developer 323 Industries originally scheduled the Halo 5 release date for some time in 2014. This was when the game was originally announced at E3 2013 though, so we expected that loose release date to have a little launch leeway.

However, we may have to wait until next year to get Halo 5 as the voice of Master Chief, Steve Downes, revealed that 2014 may have been a bit optimistic.

“I think you may be ahead of yourself on Halo 5,” said Downes in an interview with GameZone. “I wouldn’t expect anything until 2015.”

Halo 5 News: What we know so far

Although there’s been very little information released so far, we do have some concrete evidence that there will be some more news at E3 2014, or maybe even before.

“We showed a hint of what we have in store at E3 last year and we’re excited to share more in the not-too-distant future. Please be patient – we can’t wait to show you what we have in store,” explained 343 Industries Executive Producer Josh Holmes in a blog post back in January 2014.

Hopefully we’ll finally find out whether it is called Halo 5 and if we’ll have to wait until next year to get it on our Xbox One.

We get a glimpse of one of the game’s “prominent” new locations
343 Industries released a Halo 5 concept art sketch early in 2014, teasing us with one of the game’s “prominent” locations.

The concept art was described as “an early exploration of a new location that feature prominently in a little game project we’re tinkering with”, by 343 Industries Executive Producer John Holmes.

“We’re proud of what we accomplished with our first release in Halo 4 and now we’re focused on something much more transformative as we make the leap to the next generation of Xbox.”

Unfortunately for us Halo fans, Holmes denied any more information on the concept art, especially any indication as to how the location will be featured in the next Halo game.

Halo 5 is the name of the next Halo after all?

Halo 5 may well be the name for the Xbox One Halo title, according to some Facebook images posted by the company responsible for the Halo trailer.

Axis Animation released an image with the Halo 5 branding along with a reworked version of the E3 Halo 5 trailer.

“The new work just keeps on coming. Check out our trailer for Halo on Xbox One,” said Axis Animation.

343 Industries has yet to confirm whether Halo 5 is the new title after all, but we imagine Axis Animation won’t be doing any more trailers for them.

Halo 5 Storyline

All we know about the Halo 5 storyline is what little we can glean from the E3 trailer. Master Chief is shown roaming cloaked in the desert, before being presented with a huge robotic bird that emerges from the sand.

To be honest, there’s very little details provided, and even 343 Industries said the footage is merely representational rather than direct game footage.

However, we did get a few more details from a Microsoft Store listing for the Xbox One title. A brief description was posted on the game’s product page, giving us a few more tiny details.

“Halo for Xbox One takes the now-legendary saga to new heights and is one of the most anticipated games for the new console,” read the leaked details.

“In possession of a mysterious data chip, Petty Officer John-117, aka Master Chief, confronts a new battery of challenges and tests in a Herculean effort to stay alive in a galaxy where sentient life is mercilessly hunted. Pre-order the next chapter in the wildly popular Halo series designed exclusively for Xbox One.”
