GeniCan makes any bin smart

Scans whatever you bin

Amazon's Dash Buttons promise to let you reorder goods as soon as you run out. But what if your brand of choice doesn't have a Dash Button? Say hello to GeniCan.

It's a sensor that fits to your bin. As you put things in the bin, it scans their barcodes and automatically adds the items to a shopping list that's on the accompanying app. If what you're binning doesn't have a barcode, it'll ask you what the item is. Speak it aloud, and it'll be added to your list.

The shopping list is organised by aisle, which should speed you up in the supermarket. It sends you coupons to save money, and has the option of automatic delivery – when you have enough items on your list to warrant a big shop, tell it and it'll arrange a delivery from your supermarket of choice.

You don't need any tools to attach it to your bin – it clips to the side using magnets. It uses your home Wi-Fi network to send the items to your shopping list, but can also reach you when you're out and about. Because the shopping list is on your smartphone, you should have it with you wherever you go.

It's a neat idea, but we're not sure it solves a problem. Is it really that hard to make a shopping list? This is borne out by its funding, or lack of so far. In 22 days it has raised just over $5,000 of a $50,000 target. It still has 17 days to go, but it's a mountain to climb. Not that we're ones to rubbish anyone's chances.
