Curved Sony SmartBand Talk lands with wrist-based call taking

Wearables are the future. As are curved displays. Killing two future tech birds with one stone, Sony has targeted both avenues with the newly unveiled Sony SmartBand Talk.

One of a mass of new mobile gadgets to come from the Japanese manufacturer, the smartphone-syncing, call-accepting SmartBand Talk has been officially unveiled as part of the company’s IFA 2014 showing.

As the name suggests, the SmartBand Talk is able to be used for call handing,” Calum MacDougall, Sony’s Director of Xperia Marketing said showing off the device. “It is HD voice enabled and allows you to receive and make calls from the wrist.”

He added: “From consumer insight research on this device, it was the Star Trek effect – that that you can talk to your wrist – which was particularly appealing to consumers.”

Sony SmartBand Talk Features
As you would expect from any wrist-based wearable, the Sony SmartBand Talk comes packing the usual fitness and activity tracking credentials.

Brimmed with all manner of sensors, the device features a pedometer for activity tracking and an altimeter to monitor stairs claimed. Capable of automatically detecting when you’ve fallen asleep, the Talk also keeps tabs on your sleeping habits.

All of this information is pretty useless without an app to break it all down though. As such, Sony has introduced its new LifeLog service – think iOS 8’s HealthKit but for Xperia devices.

The Talk will line up as a sibling to the existing Sony SmartBand activity tracker.

Keeping you abreast of all your daily metrics, an always-on 1.4-inch E-Ink display offers instant feedback without being a massive drain on the battery.

Talking of batteries, the SmartBand Talk plays host to a tiny 70mAh offering. Despite the size, Sony has claimed this power savvy gadget will last five days on a single charge.

Standard features aside, the device’s party piece is its ability to act as a hands-free calling option. With an integrated mic and speaker, the wearable lets to accept calls when synced with a compatible handset.

Ensuring you don’t sound as daft as you’ll look talking to your wrist, the SmartBand Talk ups its calling options with HD audio credentials.

Calls can be accepted by clicking your fingers, while the watch substitute can also be used to control your phone’s music player.

Set to be made available in a variety of colours at launch, the SmartBand Talk will feature interchangeable straps with the screen easily popping out of the body.

Sony SmartBand Talk Release Date and Price
The Sony SmartBand Talk will hit retailers this ‘autumn’, although a more precise release date is still unclear.

The wearable will set wannabe owners back €159 (£126) on the continent. Finalised UK pricing has yet to be confirmed.
