DICE has revealed that the new Battlefield 4 multiplayer campaign will be able to support 64 players, demoed in the EA Games E3 demonstration.
EA Games showed off the Battlefield 4 multiplayer demo on a map called the Siege of Shanghai. The multiplayer is capable of supporting 64-players at any one time, with both next-generation consoles supported and PC.
Patrick Bach, Executive Producer at DICE, said the new Battlefield 4 multiplayer is the “total package of emotion, immersion and being connected.”
The Siege of Shanghai map is huge and expansive, with the landscape containing all terrain from skyscrapers to underground subway lines.
Combining land, sea and air battle, Battlefield 4 multiplayer will also introduce a new Commander Mode that is designed to work with the Microsoft Xbox SmartGlass app.
The app offers a birds-eye view of the battlefield and interacts with the Battlefield 5 Battlelog tech. During the E3 Battlefield 4 multiplayer demo, DICE demonstrated how the player could call in off-map artillery to destroy a tank convoy.
The Battlefield 4 website reveals further details. Commander Mode will allow players to "command the battlefield", "deploy gunship strikes" and "launch missile strikes" against the enemies.
“Take part in massive 64-player battles on next-gen platforms and PC, while 2 Commanders can join the fight to help turn the tide”, reads the Battlefield 4 website. “Order squad members to assist in the fight and play to your own strengths.”
As DICE explains, two people can act as Commanders in each game, helping players make the best decisions for a tactical assault against the enemy.
EA Games has also revealed the second single player Battlefield 4 multiplayer during its E3 press conference, entitled Angry Sea. Taking place on an aircraft carrier out at sea, the single player E3 trailer shows new gameplay footage fighting against Chinese forces as the ship slowly sinks.
“Battlefield 4 brings the strongest elements of DICE’s best in class multiplayer into single player,” reads the Battlefield 4 website. “This includes the ability to command your squad, leveraging the all-out vehicle warfare the series is known for, and featuring dynamic destructible environments.”
Battlefield 4 will be out for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC sometime in the “fall”, so Q3 this year or beginning of Q4. It will also be released on the Xbox One and PS4.
