Apple skipping iPad Air 3 this year, says report

iPad Air 2

The iPad Air 2 is one of the best tablets money can buy, but its successor might be a long way off.

It’s been suggested that Apple is planning to snub the iPad Air 3 this year altogether.

That’s according to a report by DigiTimes, which claims we won’t see a third-generation iPad Air any time soon.

“The sources pointed out that Apple has turned conservative about its tablet product line and is not planning to release a next-generation model to replace the existing iPad Air tablet,” the report reads.

It claims that the decision was made due to a declining demand for tablets in previous years.

However, the report goes on to suggest that Apple is “ready to release” its fourth-generation iPad Mini.

“The related supply chain is already preparing the device’s components,” the article explains.

It continues: “The fourth-generation model will only have a few small upgrades from the third-generation one.”

The iPad Mini 4 has already been rumoured for an autumn 2015 launch, so this gels with previous leaks.

Apple is also expected to unveil the much-mooted iPhone 6s this year at a special event on 9 September.

However, it should be noted that the company hasn’t confirmed any launch details for Q3/Q4, and DigiTimes is hit-and-miss with its prospective Apple reporting.

Looks like the Apple is growing up finally. Rather than insisting on the pointless yearly updates, it's now waiting to develop something properly before rolling it out.

Let's be honest, the last few updates to the ipad and ipad mini were mediocre/pointless at best.

This. The Air2, if you like iPads, has a pretty great form factor. Its a nice weight, its got good chassis strength, a great screen, great battery life and I would suggest the processor is easily powerful enough to keep it going another year. I still use an iPad 4 and would say that is now just about getting to the point where I would like a bit more horsepower. So the Air 2 has some legs yet. There is just no point in releasing another, with a myriad of incremental upgrades. I hate that, especially the pointless race to making things ever thinner...

Everything is at that level now where its more than good enough for more than most people. Personal computers reached this point a few years ago (still using a 2010 iMac and bar an SSD upgrade, can't really find a need for more performance, even with heavy photo editing) and now phones and tablets are (mostly) following.
