Apple has announced an all-new News app that looks set to its ailing Newsstand predecessor.
It’s Apple’s attempt to combine the immediacy of web-based content with the aesthetics that come with magazine publishing.
To that end, Apple has spent a lot of time trying to make News look beautiful, and it seems to have paid off.
Pages are rich with content, with various media on offer including text, images, video, audio, and animations.
The app follows millions of topics and pushes stories to you based on interest profiles that you provide.
News collects all the stories it thinks you want to read in a single feed called ‘For You’.
Readers can also check out specific publisher channels and interesting topics in the ‘Favourites’ tab.
There’s also ‘Explore’, which lets you find new content based on what News learns you may be interested in.

The company has over 20 publishers with over 50 titles on board, including Time Inc., Condé Nast, ESPN, The New York Times, Hearst, CNN, and Bloomberg.
The entire system is powered by Apple’s custom News Format, a new digital publishing format that lets publishers create News-friendly layouts.
Bob Sauerberg, Condé Nast’s president, said: “News offers an environment that combines the rich, immersive design of our photography, artwork, and editorial expertise with the interactivity and dynamism of digital media – it’s stunning.”
Publishers can sign up to the service now at Apple’s website, although News won’t be available until the iOS 9 launch later this year.
