The much-mooted 12-inch MacBook Air with Retina display has been tipped for a 2015 launch.

The device currently only exists as hushed whispers at One Infinite Loop, but is set to begin mass-production in Q1 next year.

This week’s Apple chatter comes courtesy of Digitimes, which revealed a pilot production is already underway and will be completed by the end of 2014.

According to the report, mass production has been delayed due to ‘low yield rates’, but the gradual resolution of this issue means factories will soon be a-go to build fresh Apple fare.

The sources also disclosed that Quanta Computer would be manufacturing the new device, although the firm declined to comment on the rumour.

Reports tip the new MacBook Air to land with Intel’s Broadwell processors, as well as a brand new chassis that will bring down both thickness and weight.

The device would mark Apple’s first foray into 12-inch displays for the MacBook series, and would also land as the first MacBook Air to boast a Retina display.

The current MacBook Air comes in just two flavours currently – 11-inch and 13-inch, so a new form factor would help bridge the gap and offer more choice for size-conscientious consumers.

Apple is also expected to kick off Apple Watch production at the same time as MacBook Air manufacturing will begin.
