If you’re in possession of an unlocked or developer edition HTC One (M8) handset, we’ve got some pretty good news for you; Android 5.0 Lollipop will be available to download from today.

A top HTC official sent out a tweet on Tuesday confirming the over-the-air update will begin rolling out now the firm has received technical approval from Google.

The long-awaited Android 5.0 Lollipop update for HTC’s flagship device will also come alongside the brand new Sense 6 user interface.

HTC’s VP of Product Marketing Mo Versi tweeted (via 9to5Google): “HTC One (M8) Unlock and Dev Owners! We have received TA from Google on Lollipop + Sense 6. OTA will be out starting tonight.”

HTC had long promised to get the Lollipop update into the hands of customers within 90 days of Google taking off the wrapper.

Although today’s roll-out achieves part of that goal, it gives the company until February 3 to get it to other editions of the popular aluminium-coated smartphone.

Given how long the carriers tend to stew over these things, it’s difficult to imagine Android 5.0 hitting the HTC One (M8) before next month’s MWC 2015 show in Barcelona.

The HTC One M8 was one of the top performing smartphones of 2015 earning a brilliant 9/10 score here on TrustedReviews.

We praised the large, sharp 5-inch 1080p screen, the feature packed Duo camera and the class-leading metal design.

It will continue to front HTC’s mobile range until the arrival of the HTC One (M9), which may make an appearance at next month’s hotly anticipated mobile-centric expo.
