UPDATE: Apple has issued a statement claiming the issue has now been fixed.
An Apple spokesperson says:
“We experienced a brief issue with the software update process, affecting a small number of users during the first hour of availability. The problem was quickly resolved and we apologize to those customers. Anyone who was affected should connect to iTunes to complete the update or contact AppleCare for help.”

Some iPhone and iPad users rushing to upgrade to the new iOS 10 operating system are experiencing problems when downloading the update over-the-air.
According to posters on Twitter and the MacRumors forums, many who’ve attempted to update on iOS 10 release day are seeing their devices enter the dreaded recovery mode before the install can be completed.

This issue brings up the ominous “connect to iTunes” screen while the software attempts to install on the iOS device in question.
This requires users to connect their phone or tablet to a computer with iTunes in order to restore functionality through a backup or, failing that, a fresh install.
According to hundreds of posts on Twitter, multiple iPad and iPhone models are affected.
