Virgin Media has sold a chunk of its user-base to rival telecoms firm TalkTalk.
Over 100,000 customers that made up the firm’s ADSL network have moved across to TalkTalk, although it’s unclear how much Virgin Media demanded for the users.
Virgin initially only offered ADSL to consumers whose residences didn’t fall within the cable network boundaries.
ADSL was never Virgin’s focus though, which marketing resources typically focused on the cable network. Now the final death knell for ADSL has arrived.
A spokesperson for TalkTalk said: “We are pleased to have agreed this deal which reflects the scale and quality of our network.”
“These customers will be able to benefit from our full range of great value products, including TV and mobile, and we aim to make all of them better off.”
Cable typically offers faster speeds than ADSL, and although cable doesn’t have as good coverage, it’s unsurprising Virgin Media wants to shift attention to cable fully.
It’s likely good news for the transferred customers, as TalkTalk hasn’t written off ADSL like Virgin Media has just yet.
Virgin Media launched its own ultrafast fibre optic broadband service earlier this year, with speeds rising up to 152Mb.
