Sony was forced “back to the drawing board” with DriveClub

Sony had to go “back to the drawing board” with DriveClub in order to make it a “great game.”

DriveClub was one of the original PS4 game announcements, but has still yet to be released due to issues with the game’s quality.

In development at Sony’s Evolution Studio, which is responsible for the MotorStorm franchise, DriveClub is the first PS4 exclusive racing game.

It was originally intended to be a PS4 launch title, but was suddenly delayed on the day before the PS4 release date in the US with a statement saying “the team requires more time in order to deliver on their vision.”

Speaking in an interview with IGN, Head of Software Product Development at Sony, Scott Rohde said the decision to delay was made so as not to do games a “disservice” by shipping before the game was fully polished.

“What I will say is that it all comes back to that fundamental principle, and that’s that we want to build great games,” said Rhode. “We really don’t want to release a game before it’s ready.”

“Sometimes this happens in the normal course of business, where we think we’re back on track to deliver what we think is going to be a great game, and when we got closer, we realised that we’d be doing everyone a disservice if we shipped it before it was ready.”

Of course, delaying a title can be a costly move for a publisher and developer, but it seems Sony is more than willing to incur the costs if the game will be heavily improved as a result.

“I think that at PlayStation, perhaps more than at other places, we’re willing to kinda eat that [cost] and go back to the drawing board and make sure the game is great before we ship it. And that’s what’s going on right now with the game.”

Rodhe was unable or unwilling to provide a release date window for DriveClub, even if it would still launch sometime this year.

Hopefully, we’ll get some more details on DriveClub in due course.
