Samsung to start selling refurbished Galaxy S7s on the cheap?

There’s no doubt Samsung makes some of the best smartphones available, but all that sleek design and top-end hardware doesn’t come cheap.

Now, it seems the company has decided to address the issue with a new refurbishing programme that could see used versions of its high-end handsets resold to consumers.

The news comes via a report from Reuters, which quotes an anonymous source ‘with direct knowledge of the matter’.

According to the report, the programme will offer refurbished versions of handsets returned to Samsung as part of its one-year upgrade scheme in markets such as the US and South Korea.

The phones would be sold at a lower price, although just how big a discount we can expect remains unclear – as does which countries Samsung is planning to launch the new programme in.

However, the anonymous source did reveal that it could launch as early as next year.

It seems Samsung is attempting to bolster a recent bump in smartphone profits with the resale programme, which should help the company compete with rivals in the Chinese market.

Competitors such as OnePlus consistently undercut Samsung on smartphone pricing, while offering similar handset specifications.

As Reuters notes, the re-sale scheme could also help Samsung increase its presence in emerging markets such as India, where the top-end handsets are priced too high for most consumers.

Whether the UK will see any cheap used Galaxy S7s in the future remains unclear, and Samsung has not confirmed any of the report at this point.

But it’s a move that makes a lot of sense for Samsung, and which we’re sure many UK customers looking to get their hands on a reduced-price Note 7 would welcome.
