Samsung shows off word’s first curved OLED TV

Samsung already revealed its Samsung 55-inch OLED TV F9500 earlier at CES 2013, but it’s not resting on its laurels. Today it introduced a curved OLED display which it claims provides a “more immersive viewing experience” than a regular ‘flat’ TV.

No details are known of the large Samsung curved OLED (organic light emitting diode) panel other than its curvaceous nature. The Korean company has not released resolution or exact size. However, we wouldn’t be surprised to find that it’s a 55-inch TV with a standard Full HD (1080p) resolution.

Unfortunately, Samsung has yet to announce a 4K TV, even though rivals already have, with the Panasonic 56-in 4K OLED and Sony’s similarly-endowed model both on display at CES.

Ideally, we want a 4K curvy OLED TV, as the wrap-around effect of the curved sides would indeed enhance the feeling of being ‘in’ the picture (a bit like an iMax cinema in your home). OLED is the first display technology that’s both flexible enough and offers perfect viewing angles to allow high-quality yet slim concave screens to be a reality.

Mind you, we’ve seen curved monitors before, like the NEC CRV43. However, that wasn’t exactly a display you could life with one hand, and it didn’t offer OLED’s unmatched visual quality or power frugality.
