Samsung has released a statement saying that it doesn’t believe there are any problems with its S7 or S7 Edge handset batteries, following a handful of reports of incidents over the last few months.
The company has come under a lot of pressure in recent months for its problems with the Note 7 battery and the subsequent recall of all the handsets around the world. Unfortunately, problems multiplied when the replacement units also started catching fire, ultimately leading to a permanent withdrawal from sale.
Obviously, given the attention Samsung now has on it over the issues, this latest statement is an attempt to get ahead of isolated reports of Galaxy S7 handsets also posing a fire risk. However, according to the statement, there are no issues with the S7 battery and any incidents were related to serious damage to the devices.
“Samsung stands behind the quality and safety of the Galaxy S7 family. There have been no confirmed cases of internal battery failures with these devices among the more than 10 million devices being used by consumers in the United States; however, we have confirmed a number of instances caused by severe external damage. Until Samsung is able to obtain and examine any device, it is impossible to determine the true cause of any incident,” the company says.
It’s unusual for a pre-emptive statement to be sent out in this way, but it’s also understandable given the recent concerns over the Note 7 that it would want to reassure customers that there’s no potential danger from an undamaged handset.
Figures released last week suggest that Samsung’s phone shipments were down around 14 percent in comparison to the same time last year as a result of the Note 7 debacle, but other handset makers didn’t really manage to capitalise on it entirely.
