Samsung has unveiled its new 8GB LPDDR4 DRAM module aimed at high-end smartphones, tablets, and notebooks.
The company previously debuted the industry’s first 4GB LPDDR4 mobile DRAM module in December 2014, and has now doubled the amount of memory available with its latest offering.
Manufactured using a 10nm process, the new module includes four 16 gigabit (2GB) LPDDR4 memory chips, which are stacked to form the overall 8GB capacity.

These chips operate at up to 4,266Mbps, resulting in transmission of data at more than 34GB per second, when used with a 64 bit (x64) wide memory bus.
Samsung says the new module will especially improve mobile performance for those using Ultra HD, large-screen devices.
“The advent of our powerful 8GB mobile DRAM solution will enable more capable next-generation, flagship mobile devices around the world,” said Joo Sun Choi, executive vice president of Memory Sales and Marketing at Samsung Electronics.
“We will continue to provide advanced memory solutions offering the highest values and leading-edge benefits to meet the escalating needs of devices having dual camera, 4K UHD and VR features.”
Whereas the previous 4GB module was built using a 20nm process, the new version manages to use the same amount of power thanks to the power-efficient circuit used with the 10nm node.

The 15mm x 15mm x 1.0mm dimensions also mean the new module will be able to fit into a compact space along with the device’s application processor or with UFS memory, depending on the device.
Samsung will debut its Galaxy S8 smartphone next year, which is expected to introduce a number of innovations. Whether the new 8GB RAM module will debut on the new phone remains to be seen, but with some suggesting the company will delay the launch of the S8 following the Note 7 overheating debacle, there could just be time to integrate it into the design.
Its inclusion would also likely make the next flagship Samsung phone compatible with Google’s Daydream VR platform, but we’ll have to wait and see exactly what Sammy’s planning.
