Samsung is apparently ploughing money into a new service aimed at offering short-form videos for mobile users.
The company is said to be spending “several tens of millions of dollars” on new video content for a service going by the name of Volt, though it will likely launch under a different name entirely.
That’s according to tips received by The Information, which also claims that the service could include music.
The website says that Samsung is looking to create a lightweight video service for which just a couple of dollars per month would be charged.
Apparently, the former co-president of Disney Interactive, John Pleasants, is overseeing the project for Samsung.
Samsung has scaled back its mobile video ambitions in recent years, following an agreement with Google to give its Play Movies service more room to breath. It seems as if the company is intent on returning with something a little different, however.
The Korean company is apparently hoping to lure Hollywood talent for its new venture, but apparently this won’t mean fully fledged productions like Netflix offers. Indeed, that “tens of millions” budget doesn’t even approach the hundreds of millions of dollars the current video streaming king spends on content.
There’s no further information on the finer details of Volt or even a suggestion of a launch window, so it would appear to be some way off – if indeed it ever sees the light of day. Still, it sounds intriguing.
