Samsung Galaxy S5 16GB only has 10GB of user available storage

The Samsung Galaxy S5 16GB model will only offer 10.7GB of user available storage.

According to SamMobile, the Galaxy S5 will offer 10.7GB out of the possible 16GB due to software features and the TouchWiz UI bloatware.

Last year, Samsung came under great criticism for the storage space issues in the Samsung Galaxy S4, after it was alerted to the problem by a BBC Watchdog investigation.

Due to TouchWiz UI features, the Galaxy S4 only initially offered around 9GB of user available storage.

“We appreciate the issue being raised and we will improve our communications,” said a Samsung spokesperson at the time. “We are reviewing the possibility to secure more memory space through further software optimisation.”

From the looks of things the Galaxy S5 storage issues won’t be as large as with the Galaxy S4, but over 5GB of the phone’s available memory will be taken up by system memory items that are “required to run the system.”

This may be reduced by the time the Samsung Galaxy S5 release date on April 11 rolls around and the company has finished optimising everything on the final version.

Compared to stock Android smartphones like the Google Nexus 5, the Galaxy S5’s bloatware eats up a lot of the internal storage offered.

Of course, the Galaxy S5 comes with a microSD card slot with support for memory cards up to 64GB and the ability to move apps onto the external storage, so this should resolve some of the storage space issues.

The Samsung Galaxy S5 was launched at MWC 2014 last week alongside the second-generation Samsung Gear 2 and Samsung Gear Fit.
