Samsung Galaxy Glass smartglasses tipped for a September IFA 2014 launch

Samsung is developing its own Google Glass alternative that it will launch in September.

Tentatively called Samsung Galaxy Glass, Samsung’s smartglasses are tipped to be the main attraction during Samsung’s IFA 2014 press conference.

According to various Korea Times sources, Samsung has been developing its smartglasses technology for quite so time and has already registered a patent for the device with the Korean Intellectual Property Office.

“The reason is simple. The market potential for smart glass is huge”, said a Samsung Electronics official. “It will be used in trucks, cars and has a greater impact on related industries such as glass- and coatings-makers.”

The Samsung Galaxy Glass has been in development for quite some time and official suggest it will be ready for launch in September at the Berlin-based IFA technology show.

“The new smart glass to be introduced by Samsung is a new concept of wearable device that can lead to an exciting culture of communication. The smart glass will present our aim to lead the new market with proven capability. Wearable devices can’t generate profits immediately. Steady releases of devices are showing our firm commitment as a leader in new markets,” said a Samsung Display official.

Similar to Google Glass, the Samsung smartglasses would connect with a smartphone to display various content and app alerts on a translucent or transparent lens. You’ll also be able to listen to music and make phone calls using the device.

It could even offer similar functionality to the Samsung Galaxy Gear but just mounted in front of your face.

The Google Glass is tips to become commercially available during the latter half of 2014, according to “an executive at Google’s local parts supplier” in Korea.

“It will be interesting to see which companies get better stakes in the race for smart glasses. Players definitely want to enjoy a ‘first-mover’ advantage in this new and highly lucrative market,” said the Google parts supplier exec.
