Razer has announced it has acquired Ouya, the company behind the Kickstarter Android console that everyone forgot about.
Ouya has been looking for a buyer for a number of months, after it found itself struggling with financial woes.
But now it’s found one in Razer, the company who makes some great PC gaming peripherals and gaming laptops.
The sale apparently closed back on June 12, marking Razer’s first ever acquisition.
Razer isn’t interested in the Ouya hardware though, as the company is primarily interested in Ouya’s software assets that it can use to cement itself as a player in the Android TV gaming sphere.
That means the little Ouya console itself has an uncertain future, as Razer is focused on its own Razer Forge TV micro-console and associated platform and peripherals.
“In the near future, Razer will be providing existing Ouya users with a clear path of migration to the more advanced Forge TV micro-console and Serval controller bundle,” came the Razer statement. “Razer’s intention is to allow Ouya users to bring their games, controllers, and accounts to the Cortex TV platform on the Forge micro-console, advancing the experience of Android gaming on TV that they have previously enjoyed.”

That means Ouya as a console isn’t going to be supported for much longer, with Razer looking to offer some very attractive discounts for Ouya users to adopt its Forge TV instead.
The Ouya Store will also be relaunched as Cortex for Android TV, which will be an extension of Razer’s Cortex PC gaming platform. It’ll act as a new hub for the Forge TV.
