Original Xbox games could be added to Xbox One backwards compatibility

Microsoft could add original Xbox games to the Xbox One backwards compatibility line-up in the future.

If you’ve still got original Xbox games hanging around your house, hold on to them, because your Xbox One might soon be able to play them.

That’s according to Xbox boss Phil Spencer too, replying to one inquisitive fan on Twitter.

Of course, this isn’t exactly a confirmation from Microsoft that original Xbox games will be playable on the Xbox One in the near future, but it’s reassuring to know that it’s something that’s on its mind too.

You were able to play original Xbox games on the Xbox 360 as long as you had an official Xbox 360 hard drive.

It works in a very similar way to the new Xbox One backwards compatibility, but the Xbox 360 created an individual emulator for each original Xbox game rather than the way the Xbox One creates an emulator for the entire Xbox 360.

That meant you could just insert the Xbox originals disc into your Xbox 360 to play the game straight away. It was, and is, pretty awesome.

Xbox One backwards compatibility is certainly a boon for Microsoft’s latest console and a huge differentiator between it and Sony’s PS4.

It’s available now via the Xbox One Preview programme, but it will launch for all to access with the major Xbox ONe update in November, which will also bring with it the revamped UI.
