Rumours of the OnePlus 3‘s imminent demise are unfounded, claims OnePlus boss Carl Pei, as he offers an explanation as to why the popular device is still experiencing severe shipping delays.
Co-founder Pei took to the OnePlus forums to explain why shipments were still being delayed, after the firm issued Android Authority with a statement assuring fans that the company was “still producing and selling the OnePlus 3”.
“Demand for AMOLED is higher in 2016 than what the industry has planned for, after an overall weaker than expected AMOLED demand in 2015. Factory capacity was cut as a result of this. Thus, leads times have increased dramatically.
“So when we saw the strong demand for the OnePlus 3, we immediately started increasing our AMOLED orders but now the supply will arrive much later vs. the dynamics we were under in 2014 and 2015. Therefore, it still takes us up to a month to deliver OnePlus 3 orders being placed today, which is a really bad shopping experience for a product that’s been on the market for a few months already.”

Recent speculation has pointed to OnePlus potentially releasing an incrementally updated device, potentially named the OnePlus 3 Plus, featuring an LCD screen.
The company was rumoured to be experiencing a shortage of AMOLED screens, used in the OnePlus 3, which Pei somewhat confirmed in his forum post – though it seems less like a shortage than a slight delay in receiving orders from the manufacturer.
And while it seems OnePlus is sticking with the OnePlus 3 and AMOLED tech for the moment, there’s nothing to say we still won’t see an incrementally upgraded version of the handset in the future.
For the time being, it seems the OnePlus 3 is sticking around. Whether the company will be able to overcome the shipping delays remains to be seen, however.
