Oculus Rift release date confirmed: “This is going to change everything”

Oculus CEO, Brendan Iribe, has finally confirmed that the retail version of the Oculus Rift will go on sale in Q1 2016.

At an event in San Francisco that was live streamed on Twitch, Iribe described how the company had slowly and surely evolved the design to the point that it’s finally ready for people to buy it.

… we’ve been dreaming about this for decades
and it’s finally here.”

He quashed fears that Oculus has moved away from gaming by focussing heavily on the topic and a new partnership with Xbox that will mean every Oculus will come with a wireless Xbox controller.

The Oculus Rift will natively support Windows 10 and you’ll also be able to stream Xbox One games to your Oculus Rift in a virtual living room. This setup will show a projection of the game you’re playing inside a virtual room – imagine a cinema room with a projector in it.

Oculus also confirmed that it has worked closely with developers to create a number of ‘Made for Oculus Rift’ games. The flagship title is Eve Valkyrie, a Elite-style space shooter based on the Eve Online universe.

Speaking at the launch, CCP CEO Hilmer Velgar Petursson said: “EVE Valkyrie is the closest you’re to get to being a real space fighter pilot.” He added that “It showcases everything that’s great about VR…It feels so real, it’s more than real.”

Other games confirmed for the Rift include Chronos (Gunfire Games), Edge of Nowhere (Insomniac) Gunfire Games, Chronos, Damaged Core, VR Sports Challenge, Esper, AirMechVR and Lucky’s Tale.

Finally, Oculus confirmed that it will investing $10 million into indie development efforts to create more VR games.

Oculus hasn’t yet confirmed how much the Rift will cost when it launches in Q1 next year.
