Nintendo 3DS getting Miiverse, Nintendo Network ID and YouTube

Nintendo has announced that it will be bringing a host of new features to its Nintendo 3DS handheld over the coming months, including a YouTube app, Miiverse access and a unified eshop account.

The YouTube app is pretty self-explanatory – 3DS owners will be able to browse and watch millions of videos on their gaming handheld. One particularly cool feature is the ability to browse video content on the bottom screen whilst watching a video on the top screen.

This YouTube app is set to arrive some time in November.

Nintendo is also taking steps to unify the 3DS with its struggling games console, the Wii U. Key to this will be the addition of a unified eshop account. By adding Nintendo Network IDs to the 3DS, you’ll be able to sign in using the same account as your Wii U. This means that you’ll be using a single balance to purchase games on whatever Nintendo system you use.

There’s no news on when this feature will make its way to the Nintendo 3DS, but the company claims that it plans to make fuller use of this unified ID system in future, so you can bet that it will be along in the not too distant future.

One example of how it will use these new unified Nintendo Network IDs is Miiverse. Nintendo has announced the impending addition of the social service, which allows users to interact with others through their Mii avatars, to 3DS.

Miiverse is set to hit the Nintendo 3DS in December.
