Niantic’s new title is a Harry Potter AR experience
Niantic, the studio behind mobile megahit Pokemon GO, has announced a new title based on the wizarding world of Harry Potter.
Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is now in development for iOS and Android, with additional details to be announced in 2018. A release date remains unconfirmed.
“At Niantic, our goal is to leverage technology to create real-world experiences that help people to discover the wonderful, and often magical parts of the world around them,” said John Hanke, founder and CEO of Niantic, Inc. “The beloved Harry Potter stories have captured imaginations worldwide for more than 20 years and soon we’ll turn the fantasy into augmented reality, allowing fans and their friends to become wizards and witches.”
It appears that Harry Potter: Wizards Unite will be developed alongside further updates and refinements for Pokemon GO, which continues to add new creatures and features at the time of writing.

Much like Pokemon GO, Wizards Unite will utilise augmented reality technology to bring J.K. Rowling’s iconic universe to life.
How its mechanics will actually work remains unknown, although we can certainly picture spells being cast in a similar manner to poke-balls being lobbed.
Famous characters and locations could also be recreated in augmented reality, using real-world map technology to have players roaming to specific places.
