Need for Speed reboot to require an internet connection

EA has confirmed the forthcoming Need for Speed reboot will require gamers to have an active internet connection in order to play.

In a tweet sent out from the Need for Speed Twitter account early on Friday, the firm said users will need to be online.

Responding to a concerned fan, the tweet said gamers will benefit from more variety and a very nondescript ‘rewarding experience with friends.’

The tweet read (via IGN): “NFS will require an online connection, but the benefits are nice. More variety and a more rewarding experience with friends.”

In a follow-up tweet, EA said the compulsory internet connectivity will boost the game’s “narrative experience.”

The reboot, which will arrive later this year, is designed to take the classic racing franchise back to its roots.

Earlier this month, developer Ghost Games said the game will restore the Need for Speed name to greatness when it arrives on Xbox One, PS4 and PC later this year.

Executive producer Marcus Nilsson wrote: “Need for Speed is one of the most iconic names in gaming, and we’re returning it to greatness in this reboot.

Pulling on our 20 years of history, and then taking a year out from releasing a game, we are making the game we’ve always wanted to. We’re listening to the fans and delivering an experience that will capture their imagination and unleash their passion for cars and speed.”
