Apple’s iPhone 8 Plus has the best smartphone camera ever, apparently

Apple’s iPhone 8 Plus is has the “best-performing” camera of any smartphone ever tested by reviewers at DxOMark.

With every major smartphone release comes a DxOMark report, which details the results of extensive camera testing performed by imaging experts at DxOLabs. While some disagree with the methods used, DxOMark reports are often a great way to determine the camera credentials for a new smartphone.

The results are finally in for the new iPhone 8 Plus, and we’ve got good news for anyone thinking about picking up the phone – apparently it’s the best phone camera ever, trumping even the Google pixel and HTC U11.

Here’s the DxOMark summary: “The Apple iPhone 8 Plus is the best-performing mobile device camera we have ever tested. Its overall DxOMark Mobile score of 94 sets a new record, beating out the 90 points for both the Google Pixel and the HTC U11, as well as the 92 that its sibling iPhone 8 just scored.”

The summary continued: “Its Photo score of 96 is also a new record, blowing past the Pixel’s 90. For Video, its score of 89 is among our highest, but tied with the HTC U11 and slightly below the Pixel’s 91. Of course, the Pixel is nearly a year old now, so it makes sense that Apple’s new flagship is breaking new ground.”

Apple announced the iPhone 8 Plus on September 12, 2017, with the phone becoming available for general release as recently as September 22.

The phone features a 12-megapixel wide-angle camera with a six-element lens, autofocus, IR filter, burst mode, an f/1.8 aperture, and digital image stabilisation. That’s paired with a telephoto lens that boasts 2x optical zoom and 10x digital zoom, as well as a f/2.8 aperture.

The handset can record 4K video at 24, 30, or 60fps and can shoot Full HD footage at 30 or 60fps. It’s also possible to record slow-motion Full HD video at 120 or 240fps.

The DxOMark report highlighted a number of areas where the iPhone 8 Plus particularly excelled, including images captured outdoors, where they noted excellent detail preservation, accurate colour, and impressive dynamic range.
