Foxconn CEO Terry Gou has claimed the iPhone 6 Plus bendgate scandal has been created by Apple’s rivals, rather than being a legitimate issue with the phone.
Gou essentially dismissed the iPhone 6 Plus claimed bending issue, saying “How can a phone bend? This was all caused by distortions from competitors. Don’t blindly listen to it.”
He also mocked the makers of videos showing the phone can be bent with substantial hand force, saying “Hands are made to shake hands, not for bending.”
Foxconn is the core manufacturing partner involved in the making of iPhones and iPads – it runs the giant factories that put together the various parts that make an iPhone 6 Plus.
Bendgate: Origins
The iPhone 6 Plus bendgate issue arose when reports and videos started appearing online suggesting the phone could start to bend from the pressure of the phone being kept in your pocket for a few days.
Contrary to what some may think, it’s not all about people trying with all their might to bend the phone.
There is a weak spot in the iPhone 6 Plus’s construction, where the cut-outs in the thin aluminium frame mean there’s very little substance to the phone’s upper-left side. The question is whether it’s weak enough to be contrude as a fault.
While Gou may seem to be overreacting in his claims that bendgate was created by rivals, they have certainly exploited Apple’s trip-up. A great many companies have produced viral images and adverts riding on the bendgate wave, including HTC, Samsung and LG.
This is not the first time such an issue has beset an Apple phone launch, either. It is eerily similar to the ‘Antennagate’ issue that arose around the launch of the iPhone 4.
That phone’s newly-designed metal framework made signal levels drop if the phone was held in the wrong way. Apple offered a free case to iPhone 4 buyers to solve the issue, but there has been no proposed solution this time. Yet.
Bendgate does not seem to have harmed sales of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, though, with the new phones having sold more than 21 million units to date.
