iOS 10.1 arrives, bringing that fancy Portrait mode for iPhone 7 Plus

After multiple betas, Apple has now rolled out iOS 10.1 to compatible iPhone and iPad models. However, unless you’re rocking a brand new iPhone 7 Plus, there’s not a lot to get excited about.

The final version brings a beta version of new Portrait mode feature, which capitalises on the dual camera lenses exclusive to the larger Apple handset.

Portrait mode enables iPhone users to take snaps with artificially blurred backgrounds, producing a bokeh effect more commonly obtained by using DSLR cameras.

Essentially the first camera captures the headshot as normal, while the second camera is used to determine how far away the subject is, offering an approximation of a depth of field effect.

Apple announced the feature during its iPhone launch event in September, but said it would arrive in a future update. That future is now.

Elsewhere, the update features bug fixes for various issues as well as the addition of Japanese transit directions.
