Google has unveiled its next mobile OS, Android 4.4 Kit Kat, choosing to name it after its favourite chocolate bar rather than a dessert as previously rumoured.
Perhaps a little tongue in cheek, Google has announced that it won’t be going with Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie after all, but rather Android 4.4 Kit Kat.
Turning to Twitter to announce the next Google mobile OS, Head of Android and Chrome Sundar Pichai released an image of the Android bot in its new Kit Kat guise.
“We now have over 1 billion Android activations and hope this guy in front of the building keeps that momentum going,” tweeted Pichai.
Originally thought to be named Key Lime Pie, Android has updated the Android home page to reflect the announcement.
“Android is the operating system that powers over 1 billion smartphones and tablets. Since these devices make our lives so sweet, each Android version is named after a dessert: Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich, and Jelly Bean,” reads the official site.
Kit Kat has also updated its Facebook cover photo to showcase the new partnership between Nestle, who create Kit Kat, and the search engine giant.
It isn’t certain when Google will make further details available surrounding the Android 4.4 Kit Kat features, but it is sure to provide a large update to the current Jelly Bean OS.
It seems a little coincidental that Google has chosen today to announce its heavily anticipated Android 4.4 Kit Kat OS. It just happens to be the same day as Apple has released its September 10 event invites for the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C launches.
Bearing the tagline “This should brighten everyone’s day”, it gives a nod to the heavily rumoured budget iPhone 5C, which is tipped to come with 6-8 colour options for its plastic casing.
Set to kick off a 10am PT (6pm BST) the September 10 iPhone launch event will be held at Apple’s Cupertino campus, so be sure to tune in.
