FingerKey app allows iPhone users to unlock Macs with Touch ID
A new app for iPhone enables the Touch ID fingerprint sensor to be used to unlock an Apple Mac computer.
The FingerKey app for iPhone 5S, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus takes advantage of the third-party Touch ID support introduced with iOS 8.
The £1.49/$1.99 app uses Bluetooth 4.0 low energy and 256-bit AES encryption in order to make a safe connection between the iPhone and the Mac.
It also works from a distance, meaning if users are in a real rush, they can unlock their iMac as they’re coming up the stairs rather than wait until they get to their desk.
The app’s developer Leandro Luizari is also promising the app will soon be compatible with Windows and Linux computers and will soon integrate a pattern unlock tool similar to the one used on Android devices.
One has to wonder whether this app’s functionality will be something Apple eventually builds into the next version of iOS? It wouldn’t be the first time the firm had borrowed an idea from the developer community, would it?
