Fabulous Beasts is a board game with an interactive app element

It can be hard choosing which toys to give your kids. Do you give them classic board games? Or embrace modern tech? This board game lets you do both.

It’s called Fabulous Beasts, and it’s a great mix of physical desktop action and digital interaction.

Here’s how it works. Between one and five people can play at once, and they each take the role of gods. They take it in turns to add magical artefacts onto a balancing tower, a bit like Jenga. Each time you successfully stack an artefact, it has an effect on the digital world, as seen on the tablet app.

The more artefacts you stack, the more wondrous and complex the digital world becomes. The aim is to stack as many artefacts as possible, and hence make the most luscious digital world, before the tower collapses.

When it does, it’s game over.

If you want a more comprehensive breakdown of how to play, check out the 26-minute video at the end of this story.

It’s raised over £78,000 of a £150,000 funding goal and still has 23 days to go. If you want to get playing, there are various tiers to choose from. £29 gets you just the beast artefacts, while £59 gets you the core edition (it did cost £49 on an early bird, but they’ve all sold out). £69 gets you the maker edition, which lets you paint the artefacts yourself.

It should ship in November, just in time for Christmas.
